Spanish Bayonet

Picture
Native to the coast and barrier islands of southeastern North America, growing on sand dunes from southern North Carolina south to northern Florida as well as southern regions of the United States, Mexico and other parts of Central America, the Yucca aloifolia - common names include aloe yucca, dagger plant, and Spanish bayonet grows in sandy soils.  The plant is known to grow to heights above 5 m (16 feet) with several stems arising from the base.  The long narrow leaves are straight and very stiff, growing to 30–50 cm (12–20 in) long and 2-3.5 cm wide. They are dark green with a sharp brown terminal spine.
WARNING
They don't call it Spanish bayonet for nothing because it's named after Señor Bayonet! The tips of the leaves are pointed and sharp! This plant can inflict painful puncture wounds even through heavy clothing!  Please use caution when approaching!!!!
